Recovering addicts need to learn new methods of coping. Techniques, such as breathing deeply when upset and techniques of meditation are often effective in dispelling a bad mood. Many studies have suggested that light exercise is also often quite effective in reducing the intensity of a bad mood. For the office environment, short journaling can be a great way to get rid of a destructive mood.

The idea is that every time an employee finds themselves in a terrible mood, they quickly jot down their anger or mood on a piece of paper, list some things they can do to improve the situation which caused their mood, and then put the paper away in a locked drawer. The process of externalizing moods, deciding what can be done about them, and then physically putting the problem out of sight has been found to dissipate bad moods much of the time.
